The main
character in this 18th Century
Scottish historical novel is named Mulligan. He is a well-worn,
burned-out Irish pirate, tired of the high seas, who now craves a
land-lubbing life. At this crossroads of mid-life, Mulligan returns to
his roots in Ireland seeking work. Unfortunately, he couldn't find work,
but was told that he could go to Scotland and make a great deal of money
carrying
sticks. Although he didn't know what these "sticks"
looked like, nor how much they weighed, nor how far he had to carry
them... all he knew was he could make a lot of money. Just before
Mulligan sets sail for his final destination, theres another twist.
He discovers he has a bastard son, a 12-year-old orphan boy named Bogie.
Mulligan decides to take Bogie with him to Scotland in order to
make twice as much money for himself. United at last for better or
worse, they set out to carve out a new life that totally revolves around
carrying sticks.
After arriving in Scotland, they
were eager to learn everything there is to know about carrying sticks.
They are disappointed after discovering that carrying sticks
for golfers is merely being a lowly caddie carrying golf equipment -
golf clubs.
This 18th Century historical novel takes place in
St. Andrews, Scotland, the birthplace of golf. It's about a father-son
relationship, how they bond together. It's about their Scotland golf adventures as
caddies carrying golf equipment and how they learned to play golf.
