BOGIE
Golf... as it wass
by Charles  Hellman

Controversial

Long before Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods became golf legends, this controversial 18th Century historical novel takes place in St. Andrews, Scotland, the site of the 2015 British Open and the professed birthplace of golf. Find out:

  • Who won the first OPEN golf tournament at St. Andrews?

  • Who made the very first hole-in-one?

  • The origin of buying the drinks after making a hole-in-one.

  • Where golf started?

  • Did the ancient golfer use white or green tees?

  • How many holes made up a round of golf?

  • Who was Mulligan?

  • What's a Stymie?

  • Who was Bogie?

  • What a play club was used for?

  • Golfing traditions and terms (origins).

Although a lot of discussion and controversy surrounds the origins of golf, author - Charles Hellman - amplifies this debate by insinuating  the birthplace of golf was not Scotland.

St. Andrews golferThe main character in this 18th Century Scottish historical novel is a well-worn, burned-out Irish pirate, tired of the high seas, who now craves a land-lubbing life. At his crossroads of mid-life, he returns to his roots in Ireland seeking work. Unfortunately, he couldn't find work, but was told that he could go to Scotland and make a great deal of money carrying sticks.” Although he didn't know what these "sticks" looked like, nor how much they weighed, nor how far he had to carry them... all he knew was he could make a lot of money. Just before he sets sail for his final destination, there’s another twist. He discovers he has a bastard son, a 12-year-old orphan boy. He decides to take the lad with him to Scotland in order  to make twice as much money for himself. United at last for better or worse, they set out to carve out a new life that totally revolves around “carrying sticks.”

This book has received high praise throughout the golfing community. It’s a must book to read for golfers and wannabees.
